I have been fortunate to find a few people I trust to act as First Readers for my work.
What do I think makes the perfect First Reader?
I like to have at least one or two non-writers, people who read widely for personal pleasure. They give me a good "read" on whether or not the story works without all the detailed criticism I get from my fellow writers.
One of challenges is finding people who give honest feedback without needing to grind their personal ax, or try to impress me with English 101 literary analysis.
Find someone who can tell you what worked, what confused or bored them, which characters stood out, and most importantly in popular fiction, was the ending satisfactory.
What I don't want is for them to say what a great writer I am, or how wonderful my writing is.
I wouldn't believe them anyway.
